Begun as a small bohemian village full of artists and counter culturalists, Coconut Grove today still holds on to its unique flavor that made this village the most unique and funky part of Miami. Just minutes from the metro Miami area, Coconut Grove is located on Biscayne Bay and makes for a great day trip out of the city to see how the other half lives.
There are a handful of nightspots here in the Grove, and with its funky feel and lively atmosphere makes going out here one of the best adventures available in the southeast. Using your ears as a guide, follow the sounds that loft through the air to find the establishment of your choice. With the sounds of jazz, salsa and reggae wafting through the air, it may be a harder choice than you think, but one that will fulfill the wild side in you and your friends for the evening.
The waterfront parks that have made Coconut Grove a favorite destination for years beckons you now. These parks are great for a day lounging around in the sun, keeping your eyes peeled for a Manatee or two in the crystal blue waters, or just watch the sailboats drift by on the waters of Biscayne Bay. Located on Dinner Key is the old base for the Pan American World Airways seaplanes that flew out of the Miami area over 80 years ago. The old hanger was rebuilt and now houses the Miami City Hall, a blending of the past and the present to bring the residents and visitors to this city to truly understand its past.
The area is also home to two very special homes, one is the Barnacle, the 110-year old home of pioneer Commodore Ralph Munroe. Then there is the the grandest home of all, known as Vizcaya, once the home of millionaire James Deering and built in 1916. this home now houses the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens and uses the shores of Biscayne Bay as a backdrop to display room after room of antiques and wonderful furnishings and is well worth a visit.
